Positive education is one of the key pillars of St. Nicholas’ pedagogy. It is an approach to education that draws on positive psychology’s emphasis on individual strengths and personal motivation to promote learning. We hope to support our students’ well-being as they flourish through their years at St. Nicholas’.
Dr. Martin Seligman, the father of positive psychology, has conducted in-depth research in six classes of virtues that are made up of 24 character strengths, each existing in every person to some extent. Out of all the character strengths, we focus on 9 of them that we hope to nurture in our students in this stage of growth. They are respectively peacefulness, gratitude, kindness, love, honesty, hope, forgiveness, creativity, and courage.
Throughout the year, our students and parents take part in various activities focusing on the character strengths. The activities help to cultivate the character strengths in children and enable them to gain positive experiences, in the hope of enhancing their positive thinking and problem-solving skills, which are indispensable in the 21st century.
Mindfulness is practiced daily at St. Nicholas’ to help children attain inner peace. We also celebrate International Day of Peace every year.
Students learn to show gratitude towards their peers, family and teachers daily and also during Thanksgiving.
Children develop kindness towards one another and also the underprivileged in society through a variety of philanthropic activities.
We promote love all year round on campus. Christmas, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are just a few festivals when they demonstrate love.
Students learn to take responsibility for their actions, leading them to be honest to themselves and to others.
Our goal is to ensure that children are full of optimism about the future, as they have wonderful life ahead of them.
By helping students extend understanding towards those who have wronged or hurt them, they learn to cultivate forgiveness.
Young children are born to be curious. Our students exercise their creativity through all forms of art, music and drama projects.
We encourage students to take risks, so that they have the courage to overcome any sort of challenges.
We aim to cultivate positive character strengths in each individual child. At any give time, you will feel the positivity in the classrooms and around campus.
